Chimney Repairs & Restoration in Springdale

Brick, mortar, crown, firebox, smoke chamber and liner. Repaired to what the inspection finds, by a Northwest Arkansas crew that has worked on chimneys since 1983.

Chapter 01

What fails first in a brick chimney

A chimney lives a harder life than the house around it. It takes rain from above, heat from below, and a few hundred freeze and thaw cycles across a Northwest Arkansas winter. Mortar joints go first. They soften, crumble, and open a path for water to reach the brick behind them. Once brick starts to spall or a crown cracks, the damage works its way down into the firebox and the smoke chamber.

The part you can't see is usually the part that matters. Clay flue liners crack and lose their joints, and a failed liner lets heat reach the framing and lets combustion gases, carbon monoxide included, drift toward the living space. Rough gaps in a smoke chamber choke the draft. A crack caught at inspection is a far smaller job than a liner that has already failed.

How Top Hat rebuilds a failing chimney

Repair starts with an inspection, and the work is scoped to what the inspection finds. On the masonry side that means repointing and tuckpointing worn joints, replacing bad brick, repairing or reconstructing the crown, and repairing or rebuilding the firebox. When the damage runs deep, a partial or full chimney rebuild is the honest answer, and we'll tell you so plainly.

Inside, the smoke chamber gets repaired and parged, which seals the gaps and smooths the rough surfaces so smoke climbs the flue instead of stalling. Cracked or undersized liners are replaced with stainless steel liners sized to the appliance, or resurfaced with the HeatShield flue system, with relining available for wood, gas and pellet units.

For a fireplace that is outdated, inefficient or out of code, there is the Ahren-Fire restoration system. It addresses firebox deterioration, flue sizing and venting problems, smoke intrusion and code concerns in one comprehensive restoration, rather than a string of patches that each fix one symptom.

Chapter 03

What a good repair looks like a year later

A good repair shows up in small, ordinary ways. The fire draws on the first match, smoke stays in the flue, and the stain on the ceiling beside the chimney stops growing. Sound joints and a sealed crown keep water out of the masonry, and that is what stretches a chimney's life by years instead of seasons.

An annual inspection keeps the repair honest. Top Hat began in 1983 as a one man chimney sweeping service and grew into a full chimney and roofing company with CSIA and NFI certified people on the crew.
